Project Title: Data acquisition for the optimization of barrier-free paths for handicapped persons by automatic routing
Abstract: Ageing of population is a dramatic problem in all countries of the European Community. It causes great challenges to the society as a whole, to communities, groups, families and the elderly people as individuals. Only new technology is able to reduce the problems resulting from a large share of old people in the population of European Countries. Fortunately, information and communication technology has experienced such a vast progress in the last decades, that assistance for elderly people by this technology became a current field of research and development. The aim of this master thesis is to contribute to the assistance for handicapped people who still live at home. A part of their everyday needs regards their movement in an urban or rural environment with as few restrictions as possible. In a time in which car navigation is a mass application of information and communication technology, including GPS, the following basic question arises: Has the development of a special navigation system for the movement of handicapped persons in urban and rural environment in principle a chance of success in the near future? This question can only be answered by an intensive investigation on the following topics: Which information is required to determine the quality of a path of a handicapped person from A to B through an urban or rural environment? Which data correspond to this information? How can a concrete path from A to B be characterized be these data as a basis for a path optimization taking into account the special requirements of handicapped persons? Where are the sources of these data? Who are the owners? Which degree of accessibility have these data? Finally a part of the master thesis should be dedicated to an evaluation of the current situation and to establish a data base for automatic path optimization taking into account the needs of handicapped persons.
