Project Title:
Data acquisition for the optimization of barrier-free paths for handicapped persons by automatic routing in buildings
Abstract:
Ageing of population is a dramatic problem in all countries of the European Community. It causes great challenges to the society as a whole, to communities, groups, families and the elderly people as individuals. Only new technology is able to reduce the problems resulting from a large share of old people in the population of European Countries. Fortunately, information and communication technology has experienced such a vast progress in the last decades, that assistance for elderly people by this technology became a current field of research and development. The aim of this master thesis is to contribute to the assistance for handicapped people who still live at home. A part of their everyday needs regards their movement in an urban or rural environment with as few restrictions as possible. The master thesis is restricted to navigation within large buildings. Such buildings may be town halls, clinics, super markets or department stores. In such buildings navigation by GPS generally fails. Thus, the master theses should give an overview on techniques for navigation by terrestrial means with respect to the specific needs of handicapped people. Corresponding topics of the thesis should be the following: Which information is required to determine the quality of a path of a handicapped person from A to B in a closed building? Which data correspond to this information? How can a concrete path from A to B be characterized be these data as a basis for a path optimization taking into account the special requirements of handicapped persons? Where are the sources of these data? Who are the owners? Which degree of accessibility have these data? Which effort is required to derive the necessary data from the building itself or an available building model? A part of the master thesis should be dedicated to an evaluation of the current state of the art with respect to automatic path optimization in closed buildings.
