Project Title: Economic analysis of the application of wireless switch systems without batteries for the illumination of the interior of buildings
Abstract: The German medium-sized company EnOcean, an innovative spin-off of SIEMENS, is a world-wide pioneer of Micro Energy Harvesting (MEH). This company developed a technology for wireless switch systems on the basis of MEH. When using such a system for switching on or off a light in a room the following proceeds: In the front-end-switch, that looks like a conventional one from the outside, the mechanical energy of the persons finger pressing the button is transformed to electrical energy. This energy is used to send a very short message in the 868 MHz band to the receiver in the neighborhood of the switch for the light (lamp), included in the conventional electric system of the building (e. g. 220 V). Receiving this signal the switch is turned on or off. There already exits a broad range of successful applications especially in office buildings. Many small companies are pushing the front of application forward. Because the new system is relatively expensive they are often confronted with economic arguments of their potential customers. Therefore it is very important to have an economic analysis that consideres the different situations for instance in existing small and large buildings as well as in the case of buildings under construction and compares economic (and some additional) advantages and disadvantages of the new technology with conventional switching system. The final aim is to improve and accelerate the decision making process of facility managers, owners of large real estates up to owners of small houses. The following topics should be included in the master thesis: Explanation of the basic principles of the technology, description of the general advantages/disadvantages, analysis of the current state of applications, investigation for companies offering components and services regarding the new technology, elaboration of calculation schemes for the estimation of costs caused by the implementation of the new system in different situations, comparison of these costs with those of a conventional systems, additional comparison with other wireless systems for switching light on or off in building rooms, in which the front-end-switches are electrically powered by batteries, discussion of further aspects as flexibility of installation, safety with respect to human beings, larceny of front-end-switches, proposal of a procedure for decision-making concerning the implementation of the new technology in a definite building (or set of buildings).
