Project Title: Registration (Localization in the Star Space) of Digital Wide-Angle Photo Plates
Abstract: The Institute of Information and Communication Technologies at BAS, in cooperation with three other institutes of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, has developed a project named “Astro-informatics”. The volume of the Astronomic Data Base of Images (ADBI) of astronomic observations on wide-field photo plates is of the order of 2 ТB, with a potential to grow above PB. Until the present moment, above 150 000 plates available in the European astronomic archives are digitalized in conformance with several research programs (with the participation of the Institute of Astronomy at BAS). Most of these images are quite old and when entered in ADBI, they have to be attached to the world catalog of observed stars, i.e., to be registered in star coordinates. The older the plates are, the more important they are for contemporary astronomic science. On the other hand, the old tools for telescopes calibration and for their positioning are far away from present-day requirements. In separate cases some of the parameters for registration and/or calibration are irretrievably lost and the image on the plate must be registered not only in a restricted star region, but in the whole star space. Purpose of the diploma work offered: To develop and study a method and a program for registration of star images on wide-angle (~2-4 degrees) photo plates from astronomic observations, done with the help of optic telescopes. When solving the problem, the experience (with relation to the references considered) for on-line orientation of satellites in the space, done by wide angle (~20 degrees) video cameras, could be applied. In the case discussed  inspecting the available wide-angle astronomic photo plates, an off-line solution of the problem (not accounting the execution time) is sought. The development includes the following parts: - A module for a’priori processing of the astronomic images: getting from FITS format, adaptive binarization, removal of any artifact-noise; - A module for preliminary (approximate) evaluation of the stars centers (a reference set, for example up to the 6-th star value); - A module for registration of the binarized star image with respect to the star catalog Ticho-2; variants: (1) in parts, if the volume of the original image is too large; (2) with a’priori scaling (reduction of the input resolution); - A module for exact evaluation of the inspected stellar; - A module for estimation of the transform matrix “plate to catalog” and vice versa for the preliminary evaluated computation error; - Demo: (1) the position of a visible star on the plate in the catalog and vice versa (2) the position of a star from the catalog on the plate image. It is also foreseen to organize a test ADBI for the star catalog used (Ticho-2 for example), which will provide the data, necessary for the modules above described. Recommended environment for software experiments – C/C++/C#.
