Project Title: Evaluation of existing data bases including information that are important for the determination of barrier-free paths for handicapped persons by automatic routing
Abstract: Ageing of population is a dramatic problem in all countries of the European Community. It causes great challenges to the society as a whole, to communities, groups, families and the elderly people as individuals. Only new technology is able to reduce the problems resulting from a large share of old people in the population of European Countries. Fortunately, information and communication technology has experienced such a vast progress in the last decades, that assistance for elderly people by this technology became a current field of research and development. In a time in which car navigation is a mass application of information and communication technology, including GPS, the following basic question arises: Has the development of a special navigation system for the movement of handicapped persons in urban and rural environment in principle a chance of success in the near future? The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to survey, investigate and evaluate data bases in European countries which can contribute to the determination of optimal (e. g. barrier-free) paths from A to B taking into account the special requirements of handicapped persons. For instance, there exists a data base on the current state of the elevators to platforms of the public transport system S-Bahn of Berlin (Germany). The survey and evaluation should include the following topics: Which information for which urban or rural areas are stored in digital data bases?, Possibilities of access to these data bases by individual (handicapped) persons, Degree of assistance of the stored data to handicapped persons , Are these data sufficient for the development of a special navigation system for these people? , Characteristics of ongoing initiatives dedicated to the development of a (distributed) data base sufficient for a navigation system taking into account the needs of handicapped persons.
